The No-Stress Guide to Newborn & Family Photos (Yes, Even With Wild Toddlers)

If you are currently holding a tiny, beautiful newborn while staring at a living room that looks like a toy tornado hit it, the thought of booking a photography session might feel a little overwhelming.

“How am I supposed to keep a brand-new baby calm, wrangle my energetic toddler, look put-together myself, and not have a complete meltdown during the shoot?”

Take a deep breath. As a newborn and family photographer based right here in Murrieta, I am here to tell you that we are not going to fight the chaos—we are going to completely outsmart it. Over the last 20 years, I’ve refined a system that turns what could be a stressful afternoon into a calm, memory-making experience.

Here is exactly how we make the magic happen without the tears (from the kids or you).

1. The "Divide and Conquer" Secret (Goodbye, Toddler Meltdowns!)

If you’ve ever tried to force a three-year-old to sit quietly in a room for three hours while a baby is being meticulously wrapped, you know it’s a recipe for disaster.

That’s why I hold a generous three-hour window for studio newborn sessions. No, we aren’t shooting the entire time! We use that time for cuddling, feedings, soothing, and wrapping. But here is the real secret: we split the session.

Typically, Mom and the new baby will come to the studio for the first half of the session. We focus entirely on those peaceful, intricate newborn portraits. Then, Dad and the older siblings arrive for the second half. This means your toddlers don't get bored, they don't have to be constantly wrangled, and you get a quiet environment to just breathe and enjoy your baby.

2. Studio Posed vs. In-Home Lifestyle: Choose Your Vibe

Every family is different, which is why I offer two distinct ways to capture this chapter:

Posed Studio Sessions: Held at my professional studio in Murrieta, California. This is where we do those classic, beautifully styled, and wrapped newborn portraits using my specialized lighting and props.

In-Home Lifestyle Sessions: I come directly to your home in the Temecula valley for a beautifully candid, lifestyle vibe. There's no pressure, no packing up the diaper bag, just your real life, real connections, and natural moments captured in the place you feel safest.

3. The Golden Rule: We are 100% Baby-Led

New moms always apologize to me when their baby cries, spits up, pees on a blanket, or flat-out refuses to sleep. Please hear me: Do not stress.

I am completely baby-led. If your little one needs to stop and eat for thirty minutes, we stop and eat. If they want to stay awake and stare at the lens, we shoot wide-awake portraits. I can create amazing, stunning galleries regardless of your baby’s temperament on shoot day. We just work with whatever they give us, with zero pressure.

4. Keeping Postpartum Styling Beautifully Simple

Your body just did something monumental, and the last thing you should be doing is stressing over a complicated outfit. For the postpartum wardrobe, my philosophy is all about simplicity. The goal is to keep the absolute focus on your connection with the baby, not a busy pattern.

I highly recommend keeping it classic: a simple black or white top paired with your favorite jeans, or a beautiful solid-colored dress. It’s timeless, flattering, and looks gorgeous against skin-to-skin newborn cuddles. (And if you completely blank out and can't find a thing to wear, don't panic—I keep some easy, comfortable options right here at the studio for you to use!)

The days are long, but the years are short. This tiny, sleepy, milk-drunk phase disappears in the blink of an eye. You don't need a perfectly behaved toddler or a flawless sleep schedule to document it—you just need a photographer who knows how to handle the ride.

Whether you want to relax in my cool Murrieta studio or have me capture your family’s rhythm at home, let’s document this beautiful, messy, wonderful chapter together.
